MARINDUQUE CENTENNIAL YEAR 2020

February 21 of every year has always been celebrated in the province of Marinduque as its foundation day. This commemorates the historic event on February 21, 1920, when this beautiful island-province was reestablished as an independent province by virtue of Public Act No. 2880 approved on February 21, 1920 by Francis Burton Harrison, Governor-General of the Philippines.

Executive Order No. 12 published in the Official Gazette on March 17, 1920 reads: "In accordance with the provisions of Act Number Two thousand eight hundred eighty, approved on the twenty-first day of February of one thousand nine hundred and twenty, I hereby establish as a province the former Province of Marinduque..." (Francis Burton Harrison, Governor-General)

For many years, this heart-shaped island-province has prided itself of being the Heart of the Philippines. Then, a long forgotten pivotal geodetic marker drilled in a diorite rock resurfaced atop a mountain here near the port of Balanacan. For all map-makers, it is point number one - the reference point smack center of the Philippines used to triangulate all networks of different datums in the country.

LUZON DATUM/Station Balanacan

The heart and the center of the Philippines thus celebrates a big milestone in 2020 - Marinduque's Centennial Year.

Marinduquenos will proudly showcase their traditional arts & culture, historical significance and valuable heritage, trade & industry, tourist attractions and uniqueness as an island-province.

The 11th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Marinduque declared February 21 of every year as "ARAW NG MARINDUQUE" (Ordinance through Resolution No. 534, dated January 28, 2009).

Gov. Presbitero J. Velasco, Jr. issued Executive Order No. 6-2019 dated July 25, 2019 for the creation of a Centennial Committee so the people of Marinduque could be afforded the opportunity to commemorate this milestone with special programs, projects and activities showcasing traditional arts, culture, trade and tourism industry, the province's historical and national significance and unique identity.
